Margaret Goodhue Johnson

April 6, 1922 - Oct. 8, 2016

Margaret "Peg" Goodhue Johnson of Albany, beloved matriarch of five generations, left this world Oct. 8, 2016, to join her husband of 54 years Lyle Raymond Johnson, who preceded her to the next life in 1994.

Peg was born the second of five children on April 6, 1922, to Myrtle Gertrude (Gould) Goodhue and Edmund Rockwood Goodhue at Brewster, Kansas. She was a farm girl until the death of her father when she moved to Metuchen, NJ, to live with an aunt and uncle for her high school years.

Peg and Lyle were married on August 29, 1940, in MacPherson, KS. Their first daughter was born in early 1942, and they settled in San Diego, CA, where Lyle was stationed in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. During the war, Peg worked for the U.S. Navy as a civilian employee. She and her sister, Mickey, worked alongside each other filling oxygen bottles for aircraft. A second daughter was born in 1944. After the war, the family settled in Goodland, Kansas, where Lyle was a carpenter/cabinet-maker and a police officer while Peg was a homemaker and two sons were added to their family. Later, Peg worked as a nurse’s aide at the local hospital.

Peg and Lyle moved their family to Albany in 1956, where they hand-built their own homes - two of them - where many family gatherings were held sharing holidays and celebrating a wealth of family events. Peg became a dental assistant and worked in a local practice for over 23 years. She was an accomplished seamstress and tailor, and produced many dance costumes, prom and recital gowns, bridesmaids and wedding dresses, and men’s and women’s suits. Peg also played the violin and piano and continued to play her favorite piano pieces through the last weeks of her life. Peg loved traveling, reading, flower gardening, attending plays and concerts, and many other pursuits. Peg was a long-time member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Albany.

After Lyle’s death, Peg traveled extensively and visited countries on six continents. She was happiest, though, spending time with family and soaking in the smiles and laughter of everyone from sisters and brothers all the way through her great-great grandchildren. She was always delighted to have company and will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.

Survivors include her sister, Mickey Baccus of Overgaard, Arizona; half-brother Thomas Sponsel of Edson, Kansas; children and their spouses, Sandra S. and William R. Hively of Longview, Washington, Judith A. and Antonio Ramaglia of Newcastle, Washington, Lyle R. "Dick: and Marjean C. Johnson of Albany, and Bruce E. and Sharon L. Johnson of Eagle Point; and a plethora of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren totaling 31. Peg is also survived by a sister-in-law, Loretta McFarland of Greenfield, California, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband Lyle, her great-great granddaughter, Addie, two sisters and two brothers.

A viewing will be from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, at AAsum-Dufour Funeral Home, 805 Ellsworth St. S.E., Albany. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 1910 34th Ave. S.E., Albany. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall. After the reception, at 2 p.m., the graveside service will be at Palestine Cemetery, corner of NW Palestine Road and Oak Road, in North Albany.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests remembrance contributions to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Memorial Fund at the address given above or a charity of choice.
