John Ivan Ukolov passed on April 15, 2024. He had faced thirteen years of Parkinson's challenges. John was born in Salzburg, Austria 76 years ago. With parents Stepan and Milana, brother Vladimir (Walter), and sister Klaudia, they came through Ellis Island in late 1949, soon deciding New York City was not where they wanted to stay. Sponsored by the granddaughter of Leo Tolstoy, they went to a dairy farm in Beatrice NE, Vladimer went to Portland and saved enough to bring the rest of them to Oregon. John was preceded in death by the above and his son John Jr.
He was a veteran, a retired welder and iron worker, an enthusiastic gold dredger, and sometimes a lucky fisherman, but most of all a great family man. John is survived by his daughters Wendy and Heather; grandchildren Zackary, Tabatha, Paige, and Grant; great-grandchildren Magnolia and Rainier; also, his wife Glenda, stepson Greg West, granddaughters Chelsey, Cheyennea, Cheyenne; great-grandchildren Natalie, Ruben, Amora, Sebastian and Jaxton and all of the wonderful spouse and companions of family. John was dearly loved by our fun-loving group of nieces and nephews and their families.
A celebration of life will be held in his honor when weather allows a backyard flag celebration.
