Brian Scott Birky
February 5, 1959 - November 18, 2019
Brian S. Birky passed away at home on Monday, November 18, 2019, surrounded by his loving family.
Brian was born in Detroit Lakes, MN to Wilford “Bill” and Eva Birky. He spent most of his youth in the Willamette Valley and graduated from South Albany HS in 1977. Brian was an avid reader from a young age and loved reading all his life. He went on to enlist in the United States Navy. After his four year service, he settled back in the Albany area. Brian worked at Oregon Freeze Dry for several years before his tenure with Cascade Pacific Pulp (formally Pope and Talbot of Halsey, Oregon).
He was known for his great, sarcastic sense of humor. Brian was always trying to get a laugh- either entertaining his siblings with tales of daily occurrences, teasing his gullible family members, or getting a rise out of anyone he could! The family always said he lived up to his name: B.S. Birky. The sound of his laugh will be deeply missed.
Brian loved the outdoors. He often went on hiking and backpacking trips with friends, family members, or just on his own. Once out in the wilderness, Brian enjoyed taking pictures of nature’s beauty. He had a brilliant eye for landscape portraits. He was very creative dabbling in drawing and writing as well. Later in his life, he took up kayaking as another way to get out in nature. Most of all, Brian loved working in his backyard. It was his sanctuary for quiet contemplation or a great place for a cup of coffee and a chat with loved ones.
In 1986, Brian became a father. His daughters Mehgan and Kaitlynn became his life from that moment on. There was nothing he cherished more in his life than being dad to his two girls, and he raised two strong, talented, and caring women.
Brian was preceded in death by his father, Bill Birky. He is survived by his mother, Eva Birky, two daughters, Mehgan Marie Birky and Kaitlynn Lee Birky, and siblings, Linda Parks, Carol Andrews, Robin Herrera, Gary Birky, Cory Birky, Lisa Johnson, and his nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, Brian wished that donations would be made to SafeHaven Humane Society.
A gathering celebrating Brian’s life will take place at the Albany American Legion Post 10 on November 30, 2019, at 10am.
