AMOS FRANKLIN MARTINAK March 7, 1920 - February 25, 2009 Amos F. Martinak, 88, passed away surrounded by his family after a brief illness.Amos was born in Elcampo, Texas. He was the second of six children of John and Sophia Martinak. The family moved to the North Albany area when Amos was very young and he attended elementary and secondary school in Albany. Amos married Dollie Dobrkovsky on November 23, 1941, and she has been the love of his life for the last 67 years.Amos entered the Army in February of 1942, and served in Iceland as an airplane engine mechanic until the end of the war.After living briefly in Seattle, where the first of their three sons was born, Amos and Dollie moved to the Scio area and lived on a small farm for many years. In addition to some farming, Amos worked for Willamette Industries, retiring in 1982.Amos loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Family vacations normally included a trip to a lake, camping, fishing, hiking, and spending time teaching his three sons to appreciate the outdoors. Amos and Dollie spent several years traveling to Arizona for the winters, where they often led hiking trips in the Superstition Mountains east of Phoenix. Amos always looked forward to an annual fourth of July picnic where he could see all of his family together. He retired from playing in the family volleyball matches when he turned 80.Amos was preceded in death by his mother and father as well as older brother Charles and younger sister Wilma.He is survived by his wife; sons Paul and wife Kathy of Albany, Bill and wife Jennifer of Stayton, and Jim and wife Judy of Salem, sister Martha of Albany; brothers Ray and Bob, all of Albany; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
