Obituary

Mr. Fergus was born in Hilger, Montana to Andrew and Hazel (Akeley) Fergus. During his early years lived on a ranch pioneered by his father and grandfather in Central Montana area. Except for two years in rural one-room school houses, and one high school year in Seattle, Washington Andrew attended school in Lewistown, Montana. After graduation from high school in 1934 he worked to obtain further education, securing an A.S. degree from Billings Polytechnic Institute, Billings, Montana, and a B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering at University of Washington, Seattle in 1942.

During the late 1930's he was an assayer at the North Moccasin Mines Syndicate operation at the Kendall Mine near Lewistown, Montana. In 1942 he joined the U.S. Mining, Smelting & Refining Co. at their Midvale Smelter, near Salt Lake City.

Andrew married Ethel Dean of American Fork, Utah in June 1944; they were joined in this union by two children, Christopher James and Andrea Lee Fergus. The family left Salt Lake City and Andrew went to work at Bennett Mines at Neihart, Montana and then Knob Hill Mine in Republic, Washington. During the latter 1950's he worked as a researcher at Washington State University, Department of Industrial Research in Pullman, Washington and as a metallurgist at Boeing Aerospace Co.in Seattle, Washington. From 1960 to 1984 he worked in minerals research with the United States Bureau of Mines, at Albany, Oregon. He lived in Albany from 1960 until the time of his death.
Andrew served in various offices and as President and Chairman in several organizations including the Oregon Section of the Society of Mining Engineers of AIME, Sigma Xi Albany Chapter, Toastmasters International 706, and the National Federation of Federal Employees Local in Albany. He served for several years on the Linn-Benton Telephone Crisis Line and also in various Boy Scouts of America leadership positions for over 40 years. For his service with the Boy Scouts he received the Silver Beaver Award in 1982.
As a convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints, Andrew was called to leadership positions in Ward and Stake church organizations and as a temple ordinance worker in the Portland Oregon Temple. He volunteered and very much enjoyed his many years working at Lafayette Grade School, reading with 1st grade students. Dancing was a pleasure he enjoyed with many of his friends.

Surviving are his Nieces Charlotte Orr, Missoula Montana; Twig Noreen, Jonesport Maine; Elizabeth Pittman Stennis, Jonesport Main; His nephews Fergus Quigley (Hideko) Japan; Jim Quigley, Woodruff South Carolina; Tom (Loretta) Pittman, Juneau Alaska; & conjunctural daughter, Zouri L. Mink, Albany Oregon. Proceeding him in death were his wife, Ethel (1984), son Christopher, (1967) daughter, Andrea (1960) and sisters Agnes Quigley Mediema and Pamelia Pittman.
