Angelo Alvisa 'Gene' Toscan, 91, a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, died Saturday in Albany.
Gene was born in Montague, Calif., to Alvisa Toscan and Alberta Manera. Gene spent his childhood in San Francisco, Calif., where he attended Galileo High School. Gene joined the Army in 1942 where he served proudly in World War II. Gene married Rosina Joan Truscelli on Sept. 17, 1944, in St. Peter's and Paul's Catholic Church in San Francisco. They had one daughter, Deborah.
Gene continued his military career with the Army National Guard as a first sergeant and later became a chief warrant officer specializing in guided missiles. Gene also received many honors including a Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Gene retired from the Army National Guard in 1972. Following his retirement from the military, Gene started his own business as an accountant which he continued until 2005.
Gene was involved in many activities and hobbies. He enjoyed bowling, gardening, cooking and was an active member of the Forester Lodge and Elks Lodge in San Leandro, Calif. In addition, Gene became the author of a family cookbook, which is still treasured by his family today. Gene and Rose moved from San Leandro, Calif., to Salem in 1989.
Gene is survived by his wife of 68 years, Rosina J. Toscan; daughter Deborah Jean Frenzel and husband Frank Frenzel; grandson Beau Frenzel, wife Erin Frenzel and their children, Carson and Parker Angelo (named after his great-grandfather), all of Albany; granddaughter Martha Swanson, husband Clifford Swanson and their children, Dominick, Selena, Anthony, Bianca and Junior, all of Albany; and grandson Frank J. Frenzel, wife Sarah Harpole and granddog Brutus, all of Beaverton.
Gene was preceded in death by sisters Maria, Angie and Louise.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, July 19, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Albany.
