IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Arthur "Jack"
Henning
April 9, 1927 – January 1, 2023
Arthur "Jack" Henning
April 9, 1927 – January 1, 2023 Arthur Henning, who always went by "Jack", was born in Oak Park, Illinois, on April 9, 1927, to Arthur and Elsie Henning. He grew up there and later attended Wheaton College as a pre- med student. It was there at West Suburban Hospital that he met the love of his life, Pauline Dunford (Polly), a nursing student caring for his mother. They were married on August 25, 1951. After graduating from Chicago Medical School, they moved to Southern California where he completed his residency in Pediatrics. He served his country for 2 years as a doctor in the Air Force in the late 1950s and they had three children while moving up and down the west coast. The highest point in his career was serving as a missionary doctor in Africa where he felt he made a difference. His family was blessed to experience many diverse cultures and places in the world. After serving in Africa, they resettled in Sacramento, California where they lived for 43 years and were active in missions at Fremont Presbyterian Church. Around 2011, he was diagnosed with Dementia but was cared for by Polly, his wife, until 2022, when a move to Oregon near his son to obtain care in a facility was required. Even then, Polly, his wife, was there helping with his care every day. There they celebrated 72 years of marriage together. Although dementia robbed him of much of his memories and abilities, it never robbed him of his recognition of his wife and family, nor his great sense of humor and he made people laugh until his last weeks. He loved the Lord and was a kind, gentle, and brilliant man who enjoyed his family, the outdoors, bird watching, traveling the world, and creating on the computer. He was dearly loved and will be sorely missed by Polly, his wife of 72 years, his daughters, Joyce McMahon of Columbia, California and Janet Henning of Sacramento, California, and son, John Henning, of Albany, Oregon. He will also be missed by his grandchildren, Jeremiah, Cameron and Kimmi Henning of Albany, OR; Bethany Wilson of Ocean View, NJ; Faith Muir of Sacramento, CA; Nicole McMahon of Sonora, CA and Robert McMahon of Vancouver, WA., as well as his nine great grandchildren. He loved the Lord, his family is comforted in knowing they will see him again!
