Obituary

Bernard Albin Rowland, 69, of Albany went to be with the Lord surrounded by his family on Monday at his home.

Bernard was born in Oakland, Calif., to Lloyd and Esther (Ludtke) Rowland. He was raised by his aunt and uncle, Dolly and Lawrence Ludtke, while attending school in Byron, Tracy and Downy, Calif. Bernie visited his relatives in South Dakota and decided to stay, attending Webster High School and working on his uncle's farm. After graduating, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served aboard the USS Leonard F. Mason destroyer in Vietnam. During this time he met Margaret Weinmaster and after his discharge from the Navy they were married Saturday, June 12, 1965, in California. Two years later they moved to Albany. He worked for Coca Cola in Burbank, Calif., OSU Security, Bi-Mart in Albany and McMinnville, and several new car dealerships in Albany and Corvallis.

Bernie dearly loved his family, daughter Janine Cadieux and her husband Kevin and grandchildren Monique, Matthew and Mark of Happy Valley, OR; and son John of Los Angeles, California.

Bernie was in FFA while living in South Dakota; became an official weather watcher in Oregon (he knew his clouds); he raised and raced pigeons for many years; and loved fishing, gardening and his salt water aquarium. He loved animals and especially his buddy, "Apollo." He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Albany, American Legion, NRA and the Good Sam Club.

Bernie is survived by his wife of 47 years, Margaret Rowland; daughter Janine, husband Kevin and their children, Monique, Matthew and Mark of Happy Valley; son John of Los Angeles, Calif.; brothers Lester Rowland and wife Loxie of Waubay, S.D., and Lloyd Rowland and wife Grace of Vermillion, S.D.; sisters Gayle Naessig of Newark, Ohio, and Marlene Van Den Berg and Harold Mitchell of Sioux Falls, S.D.; best friend and brother-in-law Richard Weinmaster and wife Judy of Albany; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 31, at Faith Lutheran Church, 930 Queen Ave. S.W., with a graveside at 1 p.m. at Palestine Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Faith Lutheran Church or the Humane Society in care of the funeral home.
