Bryce Oliver Bartruff died peacefully on Sept. 19.
Born in Lacomb, Bryce grew up on the family farm. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and was stationed in Japan. When he returned from the war he farmed mint in Lacomb where he met and married his wife, Harriet Alice (Snyder) (deceased).
In 1953, he sold his farm and moved to Portland to attend Multnomah School of the Bible. Upon graduation, he was commissioned to serve with the American Sunday School Union (AMF/InFaith) as an area missionary. He was assigned to oversee and establish new ministries for the organization in the Portland/Vancouver area. Under his leadership over a dozen churches, and numerous Sunday Schools, youth ministries and camping programs were established. In 1974 he began service as northwest regional director for the same organization, with the charge of overseeing 65 area missionaries. He was responsible for recruiting and mentoring dozens of missionaries and was instrumental in establishing Our Redeemer Press, a religious publishing company. He retired from ministry in 1991.
In 1995 Bryce and Harriet moved to Albany Mennonite Village where he resided until March of 2014. They attended South Albany Community Church. In 2005, Harriet passed away. In 2009 Bryce married Marguerite Chambers (deceased).
Bryce enjoyed his extensive garden and woodworking. He specialized in walking sticks, canes and doll furniture. In March of 2014, Bryce moved to Miramont Ponte in Clackamas.
Surviving are his son, Bryce Duane Bartruff and wife Kathy of Scottsdale, Arizona; daughter Mary Kay Horton and husband Loren of Happy Valley; four grandchildren, Christopher Dale Horton of Kelso, Washington, Joshua Bryce Horton of Seattle, Washington, Bryce Kevin Bartruff of Phoenix, Arizona, and Kerri Ann Bartruff Cruse of San Diego, California; and two great-grandchildren, Miranda Horton and Sawyer Horton of Kelso, Washington.
A celebration-of-life service will be at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at Miramont Pointe on Sunnyside Road in Clackamas (valet parking only) with the Rev Dr. Gordon Anderson officiating. Food and fellowship with family will follow. A graveside service will precede the celebration of life at 10 a.m. at the Lacomb Cemetery in Lacomb.
