Calvin Leo TignerAugust 18, 1924 - July 29, 2008Calvin L. Tigner, 83, of Albany passed away of age related causes. He was born to Ernest and Mae Tigner in Gray, Wash., the third of seven children. The family moved to Albany in the early 1930's where Cal attended school. He left Albany High in his senior year to join the Navy at the beginning of World War II. As a crewman on a landing craft infantry, LCI, he participated in the invasions of Normandy (Utah Beach) and Southern France. When the War in the Pacific came to and end he was on a Landing Ship Medium (Rocket), LSM(R), crossing that ocean to participate in the invasion of Japan. In 1945 he married Estelle Zinn of Brooklyn, N.Y. in Charleston, S.C. They lived in Brooklyn for one year and then moved to Oregon, raising their sons, Calvin and Donald in Albany and Eugene.Calvin was a successful builder in Eugene, Albany, and Newport and was always busy with his hands. He would often spend hours designing something to save minutes of time. This inventing pastime paid off for him at age 61 when the Oregon Lottery began operations in 1985. Shortly after the startup he noticed that lottery tickets were being hidden in the registers to prevent their theft. That same day that he designed the first lottery ticket dispenser and instead of retiring he started Take-A-Ticket, Inc. which is still in operation. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Estelle; sisters Pearl Marie and Laura; brothers Donald and Everett. He is survived by his sons and their wives, Calvin and Peggy of Brownsville and Donald and Sherry of Albany; grandchildren Stacey Tigner Loy, Justin, Zachary, Seth Tigner; great- grandchildren Olivia, Noah, Gracie, Wyatt Tigner, and Sam and Landon Loy; brother, Arnold Tigner, sister Beverly Lethin; and sister-in-law, Genevieve Sartory.Cal's entire family is proud that he was a member of the "Greatest Generation".In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Albany Boys and Girls ClubA service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at AAsum-Dufour Funeral Home with a graveside commital following at Willamette Memorial Park (
