Catherine Erma MillerJuly 1, 1919 - May 2, 2010Catherine Erma Miller, 90, of Albany passed away Sunday in Dallas after an extended illness.She was born in Oakland, Calif., the daughter of Pete and Mary (Faria) Thomas. She was the third born of 12 children and preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and a sister.Catherine married John Shurtz on March 7, 1942 in Modesto, Calif. A daughter, Carol Ann, was born in 1943, but lived only two days. In 1946 a second daughter, Sandra was born. In 1950 they moved to a 40-acre farm in Riddle. John worked as a foreman at Riddle Plywood and eventually they built their dairy herd and then ran the dairy full time. Catherine loved to bake, sew and garden. She was well known for her delicious cinnamon rolls and she loved to sew for her daughter, granddaughters, and great-grandchildren. John preceded her in death in 1979 and Catherine came to Albany in 1980 to be near her family. On Oct. 20, 1984, she married Glen Miller they lived in Jefferson for a while and then moved to Albany. They enjoyed traveling and spent a few months in Arizona every winter. He preceded her in death in 1997 and Catherine moved to North Albany to her daughter and son in-laws place. As her health declined she moved to Dallas Retirement Village in Dallas. She was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church and enjoyed gardening and flowers.She is survived by daughter, Sandie and husband Ken Radford of Albany; step-daughter Shirley Noble of Salem; granddaughter Angie Smith and husband Brent and children D.J., 15, and Dakota, 13, of Crabtree; granddaughter Stacey Chart and husband Lance and children Alyssa, 17, and Austin 14, all of Albany and Trevor, 22, of Corvallis; four brothers, George and Pete of Modesto, Calif., and Cecil and Ernie of Oakdale, Calif.; and two sisters, Josephine of Modesto and Isabelle of Newport.A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Willamette Memorial Park with a celebration of life to follow at 11 a.m. at Holy Cross Lutheran Church. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dallas Retirement Health Care Center and Willamette Valley Hospice for their extra special care during Catherine's illness. Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Cross Lutheran Church Window Fund or Willamette Valley Hospice and sent in care of the funeral home. AAsum-Dufour Funeral Home is handling arrangements. (
