Christian Emanuel Gerig, 96, of Corvallis went to meet his Lord Friday. He passed away at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Corvallis.
He was born in Lebanon, the son of Martin C. and Emma R. (Nofziger) Gerig. When he was 3 years old, the family moved to Wayland, Iowa, and he returned to the Corvallis-Lebanon area in 1936, where he had lived since that time.
Emanuel married Grace Pauline Kropf on Dec. 25, 1939, in Hubbard. They were married for 65 years until her death in 2005. He worked in the lumber industry for Albany Plylock, Western Veneer and Albany Cabinets until he retired in 1976. He also had a dairy farm, raised beef cattle and farmed his land along with working in the mill.
He was a member at Fairview Mennonite Church for most of his adult life but was baptized at Sugar Creek Mennonite Church in Iowa in 1928.
Emanuel enjoyed gardening and had a fruit stand on Highway 20 for many years. He was well known for his apple cider and Calla Lillies. However, his greatest love was for his Lord and Savior, his wife, children and grandchildren, by whom he will be greatly missed.
He is survived by daughters, Donna Milligan of Keizer, Linda and husband Dennis Estrada of Woodburn, and Vicki and husband John Ulrich of Albany; sons LaVerne Gerig and wife Stacy of Albany, Gary Gerig and wife Kristi of Redmond, and Bradley Stalter and wife Kristina of Redmond; brothers Eldon Gerig and wife Luella of Indiana, and Elmer Gerig and wife Florence of Albany; sister Minnie Chaffee of West Unity, Ohio; sister-in-law Kathy Gerig Brenneman; 17 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by Grace on Aug. 29, 2005. He was also preceded in death by his parents; sons Orin Duane Gerig and Merlin Dean Gerig; daughter and son-in-law Elaine and Robert Stalter; brothers Melvin, Emery, Allen and Willard Gerig; and sisters Elsie Gerig, Mabel Miller, Frances Yutzie and Mary Gerig.
A visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1, at the funeral home. The service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, at Fairview Mennonite Church, with burial to follow at Fairview Mennonite Cemetery.
