Dean E. Gerig December 28, 1934 – February 15, 2024
Dean Gerig, 89, of Lebanon, Oregon, passed away at the Corvallis Hospital on February 15, 2024.
He was born at his home east of Albany to Christian C. and Ida Boshart Gerig. He attended Lakeview and Griggs School for his early education. He accepted the Lord as his personal savior at the age of 14. He was a faithful follower for the rest of his life. He attended and was a member of the Fairview Mennonite Church his entire life.
He worked on the family farm until he went to 1-W service at Mt. Pleasant, Iowa at the age of 18. After serving his 1-W years, he came back home and did some traveling before starting work at the Toledo Tire Store. After Toledo, he worked at the OK Tire Store in Albany, where he later in life owned the business.
He married Mary Nadine Kauffman Marner on March 13, 1967, and adopted her three children. He really enjoyed teaching Sunday school, and leading and directing music at the church. He was involved in a number of men's quartets. One of these quartets sang on the radio at a Eugene station.
He made it a priority to take the family on a vacation nearly every year, going to the coast, fishing, camping, traveling out of state and visiting family. Family was especially important to him. He enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren so much.
After Retirement in 1996, he worked for Autumn Seed helping with the squash seed harvest in Hart, Michigan, for a few years. Because of health issues, he and Nadine spent a number of years, during the winter month, at Sky Valley Resort near Desert Hot Springs, California.
He also really enjoyed working with Leonard and Caleb on the farm. He did a lot of tractor work for them. He was still talking about how many acres Caleb had to fertilize while he was lying in the hospital.
He is survived by his wife Nadine Gerig, son Leonard (Wanda) Gerig of Albany, son Arlen (Wanda) Gerig of Hayward, Wisconsin, son-in-law Paul (Clara) Stoltzfus of Newberg, Oregon, ten grandchildren (and spouses), twelve great-grandchildren, sister Laura Rhodes and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death is daughter Mary Janette Stoltzfus, his parents Christian and Ida Gerig, sisters Evelyn Gerig, Hazel Eby, and Ruth Birky, and brothers Irvin, Clarence, and Norman Gerig.
