Obituary

Dennis Harold Ranta, a cherished family man, respected businessman, and military veteran, passed away peacefully at the age of 88 on August 22, 2025, in Albany, Oregon, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on July 8, 1937, in Aberdeen, Washington, to Harold and Zelma Ranta, Dennis grew up with a love for the outdoors and a strong sense of responsibility that would define his life.

Dennis's formative years were spent in the company of his sisters, Melody Porterfield and the late Marilyn Potter. He graduated from West Albany High School in 1955, which laid the foundation for his lifelong pursuit of knowledge and excellence. Dennis furthered his education at Oregon State University before earning a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from San Jose State College in 1964.

His dedication to serving his country was evident through his service with the US Army's 101st Airborne Division, where he honed his leadership skills and developed an unshakeable sense of duty. After his military service, Dennis embarked on a successful career in finance, rising to the position of Bank Manager and Loan Officer at a major San Francisco bank.

After moving back to Oregon to raise his family. Entrepreneurship called to Dennis, and alongside his father, Harold, he co-founded Random Width Inc., a veneer and plywood brokerage, in the early 1970s. The business thrived under his leadership until the mid-2000s. Even after retiring from his active role, Dennis continued to engage in property investments and stock trading well into his 80s, showcasing his sharp acumen and unwavering work ethic.

Dennis's commitment to his community was as steadfast as his commitment to his family and career. He was an active member of the Elks Club and a lifetime member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. His passion for supporting youth led him to serve on the board of the Albany Boys & Girls Club and sponsor numerous sports opportunities for young people. His contributions to the Kiwanis Club further exemplified his generous spirit.

Family was the cornerstone of Dennis's life. He found his greatest joy in spending time with his wife Judy on their farm in Albany. His grown children—Eric R. Ranta, and Kirsten D. Toland, along with her late husband Craig A. Toland. Grandsons, Chase A. Toland & Drew R. Toland. Son, Paul W. Ranta and DIL, Elizabeth Ranta. Granddaughter, Sophia A. Ranta. Late son, Kurt D. Ranta

Whether hunting, fishing, or traveling, Dennis cherished every moment with his family, instilling in them the values of kindness, humor, and friendliness that he embodied.

Dennis's love for the outdoors extended to his personal hobbies. He loved to hunt, was often found tending to his farm, immersed in a book on military history, or flying his private airplane into his 70s. His adventures in the sky were as boundless as his aspirations on the ground.

Those who knew Dennis will remember him as a man who approached life with a sense of humor, an easy smile, and a warm, welcoming demeanor. His legacy of integrity, love, and dedication to his family and community will continue to inspire those who were fortunate to have known him.

As we bid farewell to Dennis Harold Ranta, we celebrate a life well-lived, marked by accomplishments, service, and the countless lives he touched. His memory will live on as a beacon of the strength, compassion, and unwavering commitment that he demonstrated every day.
