Richard "Dick" Henry BasonJune 21, 1926 - February 27, 2009Dick H. Bason, 82, of Albany passed away Friday at Marquis Care at Autumn Hills in Portland.He was born in Des Moines, Iowa the son of Richard and Violet (Benshoff) Bason. He was raised in Des Moines, and attended schools there. After high school Dick enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a fire control man on an aircraft carrier. Following his discharge Dick attended York College in Nebraska, and married Doris Jean Canon on Nov. 23, 1948. They resided in York, Neb. until Dick received his Bachelor of Arts in 1950 and they moved to Norfolk, Neb. where Dick managed the local gas company until 1954 when they moved to Corvallis and Dick worked for Rex Clemons Sawmill. He worked there until 1957 when they moved to Albany and Dick began working for Wah Chang. Dick retired in 1988 after 31 years with the company.Dick enjoyed golfing, fishing, and was a past member of the Albany Elks Lodge, American Legion Post 10, Golf Club of Oregon's Men's Club, and the Salem Seniors Golf Association.He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Doris Jean "Deej" Bason of Albany; sons Richard H. Bason IV of Lebanon, Stephen B. Bason of Medford and Michael W. Bason of Beaverton; daughters Melanie Wilken of Albany and Dorian Hill of Seal Rock; brother Robert Irwin Bason of Santa Barbara, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.Private family services will take place. Memorial contributions may be made to Odyssey Hospice or the Golf Club of Oregon youth program, and can be sent in care of the funeral home. AAsum-Dufour Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
