Obituary

Donald L. Longtain Sr., 79, of Corvallis died of cancer on Monday in West Linn.

Don was born in Astoria to Louis Longtain and Borgfield Kvalo Longtain. He grew up in Astoria along with his seven sisters and one brother, and graduated from Astoria High School in 1952. He attended the University of Washington on a football scholarship, but left to join the U.S. Army.

He served his country from June 1953 to May 1956 and received the National Defense Service Medal, a Good Conduct Medal and an Honorable Discharge upon his departure. He married Jackie Trattner on Nov. 8, 1953. After leaving the service, Don worked as a log scaler for the Columbia River Log Bureau until he retired in 1998. He and Jackie lived in Corvallis until she passed away in March 2007.

He was a member of the Albany Gun Club and the National Rifle Association. His hobbies included golf, shooting skeet, fishing, and watching his grandkids' sporting events.

Survivors include his sons, Donald L. Longtain Jr. (Rosanne), Jonathan and Michelle of Glendale, Calif.; Jeff Longtain (Lisa), Katie, Annie and Megan of West Linn; and Duane Longtain (Diane) and Justin of Gresham. He is also survived by a brother, Ron Longtain of Astoria; sisters, Louise Baranoski of Tacoma, Wash., and Jean Hammons of Oregon City; and the six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife; and sisters Diane, Florence, Winnie, Bernice and Merle.

A celebration of life will take place later this spring at Marysville Golf Course.
