Edwin "Ed" Fredrick Carter, 95, of Albany passed away Thursday at his home.
He was born in Mill City the son of Fredrick E. and Ellen M. (Baskin) Carter. The youngest of 13 children, Ed graduated from Mill City High School and worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps in Detroit and Pendleton. In 1935, he began work for the Eastern-Western Lumber Co. in Portland. In 1936 Ed moved to Vernonia and worked for Oregon American Lumber Co. While in Vernonia, he met and married Marian Dorothy Reller in Lebanon on Sept. 14, 1940.
In 1943 the couple moved to Longview, Wash., where Ed worked for Weyerhouser Lumber. Then in 1946 they moved to Sweet Home and he worked for South Fork Lumber. In 1958 he began working for Willamette Industries Plywood in Sweet Home and retired in 1978. In 1991 they moved to Albany.
Ed enjoyed RVing with Marian and they spent eight winters in Arizona. He also enjoyed shooting pool and volunteering to take people to the doctor's office. He was a member of St. Helens Catholic Church and then St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Ed is survived by his wife of over 70 years, Marian Carter of Albany; daughters Linda Reiling and husband Don of Albany, Joyce Baxter and husband Lyle of Ocean Park, Wash., Betty Carter of Albany, Teresa Carter of Prineville, and Susan Tuller and husband Randy of Lebanon; sons Walter Carter and wife Gina of Independence, and Thomas Carter and wife Glenne of Medford; 22 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and 10 sisters. "What a legacy of love and fruitfulness."
A memorial Mass will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 24, at St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Memorial contributions may be made to Samaritan Evergreen Hospice in care of the funeral home.
