Eileen [Allum] HarkinsApril 10, 1909 - Nov. 27, 2008Eileen Harkins, 99, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great grandmother went home to be with the Lord on Thursday. With four generations of her kinfolk at her side, she celebrated her 100th Thanksgiving before going home.Born in Greene, Iowa, to Clayton and Belle Allum; Eileen was the second of seven Allum children. A Christian from early childhood, her entire life was a model of her Christian beliefs. She attended schools in Iowa before the family moved to Oregon in 1921. In Oregon she attended school in Springfield and Coburg; graduating from Coburg High School. It was at Coburg High School she met Elmer Harkins, her high school sweetheart, and they were married in 1933. Eileen worked at the McMoran-Washburn department store in Eugene to purchase her first auto. After living in Coburg for several years, the family moved to OceanLake [now Lincoln City] in 1939. During World War II, Eileen was a member of the Woman's Ambulance Corps watching for enemy aircraft along the Oregon coast. Along with being the mother of three boys, she was several years a member of the Lincoln County School Board, and became a linotype operator for the News Guard paper.Elmer's work moved the family back to the Eugene area in 1962, where Eileen later became owner-operator of Phyl's Golden Circle Donuts in Eugene. After retirement, she and Elmer enjoyed traveling around the United States in their "Rocking-Chair" motor home and living at their home in Fall Creek. Large family "get-togethers" are fond memories of Eileen's kin both at the Coast home and in the Eugene area. Eileen was proud to have voted in every presidential election, including this last one, since she was old enough to vote. She was also known as the "Puzzle Lady", spending many hours making word puzzles using famous phrases and Bible verses as a theme. She loved to read, keeping her mind sharp, and memory active, with great recall of past people and events. After 62 years of marriage husband Elmer passed away in 1995 and Eileen moved to the Albany area to be closer to family. Two sons, Morton and wife LaRayne, and Phillip and wife Reta, both of the Albany area, survive her. Son Jerry of Portland passed away in December 2002. Surviving are eight grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren; one great great grandchild; and many nieces and nephews. Her parents, her husband of 62 years, four brothers and two sisters preceded her in death.A graveside service for family and friends will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Rest Haven Memorial Park in Eugene, with a memorial service to follow at 2 p.m. at Grace Bible Fellowship in Tangent.
