Ellis Leroy MasonhallAug. 2, 1919 - April 6, 2008Ellis Leroy Masonhall was born on a farm near Fairview, Okla., to Albert and Addie (Doan) Masonhall. He grew up in Oklahoma. He served in World War II as a cryptographer, stationed at Hickam Field, Hawaii. He was the one that sent the message to the pacific fleet that the war had ended.In 1940, he married Doreen Cates. One son, David, was born in 1942. Ellis graduated from college and eventually received his master's degree from Oklahoma University. He taught school, coached and was a high school counselor. In 1956, they moved to Reedley, Calif. He loved to work in his yard and tend to his fruit trees and beautiful rose gardens. He served as a deacon at Dinuba Church of Christ for many years and was well loved in the community. Ellis was a loving, involved grandpa (aka "GPE") to Melanie Jane and Valerie Jean. In 2005, he and Doreen moved to Albany to live with Valerie and her family until their deaths. He was a member of Hill Street Church of Christ.He is survived by granddaughters Melanie and husband Dale Winters, Valerie and husband David Phelps; great-grandkids (who loving called him "G-pa") Sophie, Dylan, Ava, Lucy and Glen; former daughter-in-law and friend Joan and her husband George; son David; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doreen; parents; brother Glen Ray; and sister Pauline.No public services will be held per his request.
