Elona Rose Stephan
May 24, 1925 - August 24, 2016
Elona Rose Stephan, 91, of Albany passed peacefully in her home at Quail Run Assisted Living on Aug. 24.
She was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and grew up in the country in South Kenosha near Lake Michigan. After school work and chores were done, she and the family would sit around the radio in the evening and listen to shows like "The Green Hornet," "The Shadow," "The Lone Ranger and Tonto" and "Death Valley Days."
At the end of World War II, she moved to the Santa Clara Valley in California which was known then as "The Valley of Heart's Delight." This is where she met her husband, George. Elona and George loved the outdoors. They traveled all over the western United States and Canada, camping and hunting for beautiful rocks such as agate, petrified wood, crystals and jade. They particularly loved Yosemite and eventually bought some property near the park where they spent many happy days together.
After George passed, Elona moved to Albany to be near her youngest daughter. She lived in Mennonite Village where she enjoyed her friends and her hobby of quilting. She designed and hand stitched every quilt.
Elona is survived by her brother, Wally of San Jose, California; sister Barbara of Roseville, California; and daughters Bonnie Wiech of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Carol Hiler of Albany.
She will rest beside her husband at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park in Fremont, California. A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 2515 Queen Ave. S.E., Albany.
