Obituary

Gus Steve August was born to Veronica Ruth (Beres) and Geza August on March 31, 1925, in Pueblo, Colorado.
The son of a coal miner, Mr. August spent his childhood in Walsenburg Camp, Colorado, before enlisting in the U.S. Navy to serve his country during World War II, where he served as an aviation radioman in the Asiatic Pacific. In 1943, while attending a dance in Long Beach, California, Seaman August swept Roberta M. McRoberts off her feet, and there they were married on Aug. 29, 1945.
After Seaman August's discharge in May 1946, Mr. and Mrs. August moved to Lawrence, Kansas, where he obtained his degree in Journalism at Kansas University. After working for small newspapers in Walsenburg, Colorado, Miles City, Montana, and Worland, Wyoming, Mr. August moved his family to Lebanon to work for the Albany Democrat-Herald. During his 33 years at that publication, Mr. August's quiet manner, humility and dry sense of humor served him well in reporting local and regional news and events. He retired in March 1987.
Before moving into the VA Home in Lebanon in February 2015, Mr. August served as a founding and active member of the Church of Christ on Ninth Street in Albany, volunteered with the SMART reading program, supported his children and grandchildren's activities, and enjoyed gardening, camping, reading, and puzzles.
A devout Christian and family man, Mr. August was especially delighted by his wife, four children, nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson.
Mr. August passed away quietly in the early morning hours of March 22, 2016, at the VA Home, Lebanon.
Mr. August is survived by his wife, Roberta (McRoberts), Lebanon; and children Kathryn (Michael) Clemens of Juneau, Alaska, Nathan (Corinne) August of Corona, California, and Leslie (Glen) Soltau of Lebanon.
He was preceded by daughter Susan L. August of Corvallis, and brother, John W. August of Worland, Wyoming.
Also mourning are his siblings, Ruth Lee (James) Sterk of Pueblo, Colorado, and Fred August of Whidbey Island, Washington; his friends and caregivers at the VA Home; and members of his church family and friends.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 31, at AAsum-Dufour Funeral Home in Albany.
