Harold Levi KachelJuly 28, 1922 - September 13, 2009Harold Levi Kachel "Pappy" of Albany passed away Sunday at Samaritan Albany General Hospital.  He was born in Kansas to Goldie Adeline Waggle and Jay Levi Kachel.  He lived at home until 16 years of age and then joined the CCC's.  Harold joined the Army December 14, 1942 and was a proud member of the 14th Armor Division stationed in Europe during WWII.  On May 3, 1943 he married Velma Mae Pierson "his doll" at Fort Smith, Arkansas.  When honorably discharged in 1946 he and his bride moved to Albany, Oregon.  Harold then became part owner of a local service station and helped paint the Yaquina Bay Bridge.  In the fall of 1953 they moved to Garland, Utah where Harold joined the police force later transferring to Tremonton, Utah.  While in Tremonton he held a second job drilling irrigation wells.  In the fall of 1959 he moved his family back to Albany where he was hired by the Albany Police Department.  Harold retired from the police force as a lieutenant in 1979.  During his retirement Harold lived in both Bull Head City, Arizona and Montrose, Colorado and enjoyed traveling throughout the United States.   In 2002 Harold returned to Albany, Oregon to live the remainder of his years.He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, sister, and two great- grandchildren.  He is survived by one uncle, two aunts, one brother, one sister, four children, ten grandchildren, fifteen great -grandchildren and a great- great -grandchild on the way. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at AAsum-Dufour Funeral Home. Burial will take place at Willamette Memorial park.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Albany Boys and Girls Club, Veterans Association, or Albany Police Association.  AAsum-Dufour Funeral Home is handling the arrangements ( www.aasum-dufour.com ).
