Obituary

Harold Dean Matticks (Hal), passed away at the age of 87 on February 15, 2023, in Albany, OR.   Hal was born on September 19, 1935, to Glen and Dora Matticks in Mineola, Kansas.  He spent part of his childhood in Missouri before moving to Madera, CA.

Hal married Kathryn Piersel and had two children, Lance and Danette (deceased).  They later divorced.   He married Evelyn Brosi on November 26, 1976.

Hal is survived by his wife, Evelyn, his son Lance (Debbie), his closest stepchildren, Colleen (Carlo) and Dean (Maggie); his grandchildren, Michael, Josh, Carlo, Adam and Lisa and their families, his sister-in-law, Florence (John), plus many other family members and friends.

After finishing high school in Madera, Hal went to Fresno State College where he received a BS in Mechanical Engineering.  He served four years in the United States Air Force.  He then went on to complete a Masters in Engineering Administration from the University of Utah.

Hal began his work for the Air Force as a project engineer on the Thor, Atlas and Titan missile airborne and ground hydraulic systems at Norton AFB in California.  He then moved his family to Utah and began his career at Hill AFB where he worked until his retirement in 1992.  He received many awards and commendations for his work for the ICBM System Management Division, including the Minuteman and Titan II missile projects.  He made lifelong friends, was a terrific host, and loved his sailboat and partying with his friends.

Hal and Evelyn retired to Bandon, OR where they built their dream home near the beach.  They had almost 30 years of retirement bliss.  Hal volunteered at the museum using his wood working skills and had his dream workshop at home where he built fabulous furniture and other wood projects.  The workshop was where his grandkids spent the best time with him learning and talking.  Summers were spent having grandkids and other visitors, crabbing, walking, and enjoying the southern Oregon coast, including the jet boat rides on the Rogue River.  Hal liked wine and dark beer, and loved having family, friends and neighbors visit.

Hal and Evelyn were able to take MANY cruises to Alaska.  They generally went at least twice a year and spoiled their grandkids by taking them on a cruise as well, leading to many lasting memories.

We give thanks for the neighbors in Bandon for taking care of both Hal and Evelyn during their hardest time before they moved to Brookdale in Albany.  Many thanks also to the staff at Brookdale.
