Henrietta "Hez" WhiteApril 17, 1921 - March 3, 2008Henrietta "Hez" White passed away peacefully in the early morning of March 3 at her home at Altera Villas of Courtyard in Albany. She was born in Albany to Henry Waldo Stratton and Matilda Belle Strattton. The family resided at 118 E. Fifth St., across from the old railroad station, now home of Ciddici's Pizza. Hez attended Albany schools, and after graduating from high school, she worked at the Albany Democrat Herald with longtime society editor, Iantha Smith, now deceased. On June 27, 1946, Hez married Lt.. George R. White in Vancouver, Wash. In 1947, after her husband's service in the U.S. Army, they returned to the family home in Albany. They later moved to a new home on Fairway Drive in North Albany, where they often entertained their many friends and neighbors. Both Hez and her husband were avid golfers and became charter members of Springhill Country Club.Hez was employed by Simpson Timber in Albany for many years, but elected early retirement when George retired in 1976. The two moved to their paradise island of Maui, Hawaii, where they lived before eventually moving to the big island of Hawaii. During their years in the islands, they continued to entertain Albany visitors and a multitude of international friends. Hez's love of dancing even led her to the study of ancient hula. She taught and performed ancient hula throughout her years in Hawaii. The big island's volcanic eruptions caused respiratory problems for the Whites and forced an unwanted move to Las Vegas, Nev., where nephew Jon Pound resides. After 57 years of marriage and her husband George's death, Hez impetuously moved back to Albany, her birthplace. With the last move, she had an opportunity to renew friendships from her youth and former years in Albany. In addition to husband, George, Hez was preceded in death by a brother Francis Roner, and sisters Elsie Hendry, Georgia Hammond and Blanche Blodgett. She is survived by nephew Jon Pound, great-nieces, cousins and friends, who will greatly miss her sparkle and wit. Even though Hez and George had no children, she danced her way into the hearts of many friends. It was Hez's wishes that no service be held, but she specifically requested strawberries and champagne "in the loft" at Altera for her Altera family and friends in the community. This celebration for Hez will be from 3-5 p.m. Wednesday at Altera, 1929 Grand Prairie Road SE.In keeping with the wishes and pre-arrangements for both Hez and George, their ashes will be dispersed in the water of the tropical Hawaiian Islands so beloved by them.
