Hilda Sandberg, 89, of Albany passed away peacefully to our Lord at her home.
She was the first of four children born to the late Herman and Margaret (Holwegner) Rachel. She was born in Arena, N.D., where she grew up on a farm and enjoyed spending time with her horse "Patty." She was a hard worker while at home on the farm and would also help out on neighboring farms.
She married Clarence Sandberg on July 17, 1954, and they lived on a farm in Tuttle, N.D., until 1956 when they moved to Torrance, Calif. She was a housewife and stay-at-home mom.
After the passing of her husband on Feb. 27, 1965, Hilda performed domestic jobs to help support her family: babysitting, sewing and ironing. In 1994 she moved to Albany where she was a resident for 17 years until her passing. She was a member of First Christian Church in Albany where she made many friends and would enjoy socializing and fellowship.
More than anything, Hilda loved the company of family and friends. She loved getting letters and phone calls to keep in touch. She always had a great sense of humor and loved to razz people. She loved cooking and baking. Everyone had a favorite dish, such as her homemade chicken noodle soup, and she loved making it for you when you visited. If she knew you were coming over she would bake your favorite cookies.
Hilda loved pets and had many over the years, especially since the kids brought home animals they had rescued. She has had cats, dogs, fish, birds, guinea pigs and rabbits. She spent many hours gardening, enjoying the outdoors and planting various flowers and plants. Hilda loved quilting and made some very special quilts for her grandchildren. She loved sewing, crafting and spending time with children. She also enjoyed doing puzzles.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Clarence; son Rodney; grandson Carl; and sister Isabel.
She is survived by her daughter, Bethene "Beth" Walls of Albany; four sons, Roger and wife Norene of Mandan, N.D., Wesley and wife Andrea of West Valley City, Utah, Wallace and wife Charlotte of Torrance, Calif., and Bradley and wife Ruby of Scio; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren; sister Anna Wagner of Jamestown, N.D.; brother Ruben and wife Laverne Rachel of Wing, N.D.; and numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
She will truly be missed by the people she has touched in her lifetime.
A visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, at the funeral home. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, at the First Christian Church, 432 Ferry St. S.W., Albany. She will be buried in Arena, N.D.
