Huguette Charlotte RichardsFeb. 25, 1925 - March 19, 2010Huguette Charlotte Richards, 85, moved to Heaven on Friday.She was born in Victor Hugo, a French settlement in Algeria, North Africa, the daughter of Francois and Colette Giraud. She was the second of three children, an older brother and a younger sister.Huguette lived and was educated at Our Lady of Africa Convent in Oran, Algiers, from the age of 7 through 18. During the summer months she would reside with her grandmother at her resort overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.She met David P. Richards in 1943 during World War II while she worked at a French military base and David served as a French interpreter. They were married on June 14, 1944, in Blida, North Africa.In 1945 they moved to Marshfield, Vt., where they purchased and operated Richards Market. In 1947 they moved to Hartford, Conn., where David was a real estate broker and insurance agent. In 1959 they retired to Yucaipa, Calif., and in 1963 built and operated Yucaipa Car Wash. In 1968 they moved to Oregon, where they owned and operated Hillside Ranch near Lebanon and Burnt Ranch near Mitchell. In 1974 they again retired, this time to Albany and to a winter home in Desert Hot Springs, Calif.She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. She loved to read, travel, garden and, most of all, be with her family. Huguette enjoyed volunteering for Greater Albany Public Schools, the senior center, Meals On Wheels, the chamber of commerce and the visitors center.Her husband, David, preceded her in death in 1988.She is survived by six sons, Daniel of Desert Hot Springs, Dale of Santa Maria, Calif., Donald of Valley Center, Calif., David Jr. of Templeton Calif., and Douglas and Dean of Albany; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at AAsum-Dufour Funeral Home.
