Irma Louise VailOct. 31, 1924 - Dec. 14, 2009Irma Vail, 85, of Albany passed away Monday at the Mennonite Village.She was born in Tama, Iowa, the daughter of John and Wilhelmine (Wiese ) Backen. On Feb. 24, 1946 she married David O. Vail in Tama, Iowa. In 1951 the couple relocated to Albany.Irma worked as a secretary for Oremet and retired in 1984. In retirement she and Dave traveled the United States in their motor home and spent many winters in Texas and Arizona. She was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church for 58 years and enjoyed her involvement with the ladies guild, especially chairing the Christmas Bazaar Kitchen activities.In her spare time she enjoyed quilting with the ladies guild and the American Legion, golfing, fishing, gardening and baking, and she always had cookies in the cookie jar for the grandchildren and sons-in-law and was famous for her holiday peanut brittle. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, David.She is survived by her daughters, Jan and husband Greg Strombeck and Jacque and husband Matt Phillippe; granddaughters Jennifer Reed, Melinda Strombeck, Erin Phillippe and Danielle Phillippe; and great-grandsons David Brooks and Kaelen Reed.Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday at AAsum-Dufour Funeral Home. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Willamette Memorial Mausoleum. Memorial contributions may be made to the Immanuel Lutheran Church Memorial Fund or to Evergreen Hospice and sent in care of the funeral home. AAsum-Dufour Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
