James Robert "Bob" PayneApril 18, 1931 - January 24, 2008Bob Payne, 76, of Albany passed away Thursday, January 24, at his home.He was born in Laurel, Miss., the son of James Odell and Bessie Leola (Butler) Payne. In 1944, his family moved to Los Angeles and Bob graduated from Compton High School in 1950. In January of 1951, Bob enlisted in the Army and served in Korea until Jan. of 1954. He was proud of the fact that he was the driver for Col. VanNetta. He married Beulah Jean Brownell on Sept. 1, 1956, in Las Vegas, and they moved to Redlands, CA in 1959. Bob worked as head custodian for the school district there until he began his own custodial business. Bob and Beulah sold their business in 1994 and moved to Albany in 1997. He was always a member of the Southern Baptist Church and was proud of the fact that he performed at the California State Convention. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Albany, past president of the Knights of the Round Table, and was a professional musician and avid art collector. He enjoyed reading, hiking, playing card games and being with people. Bob is survived by wife Beulah; daughters Ellen Payne-Martz of Larchmont, NY., and Cynthia Tunell of Halsey; granddaughters Tara Clark of Salem, Katie Tunell of Halsey, Sienna Martz of Larchmont, Brittany Else of Albany, Teal Martz and Piper Martz both of Larchmont; great-grandsons Caleb Clark of Salem and Mason Else of Albany; and sister Louise Blankenship of Longview, WA. He was preceded in death by sister June Payne.Viewing will be Friday from 4-7 PM at AAsum-Dufour Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Albany Court Apartments; enter from Oak Street. Burial will take place at Willamette National Cemetery Monday at 11 a.m..
