Jean Allen McCorkle, 86, of Albany passed away Saturday at his home in Albany surrounded by his family.
Jean was born at home in Ribstone, Alberta, Canada. He graduated from high school one full year early so that he could join the U.S. Navy to serve his country during World War II.
After returning from the war, Jean soon met and married Mary Louise Christison of Longview, Wash., in 1947.
Jean's passion was working with the Boy Scouts of America. In 2009, he received the highest award issued to volunteer Scouters (The Silver Beaver Award) by the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America for his 60 years of service to the scouting community.
In 1963 Jean joined Briscoe Insurance Agency in Albany and was very active in the Albany community. He was recognized with the U.S. President's Volunteer Service Award by President Obama in 2011. He was a member of the Lion's Club, Chamber of Commerce, Fish of Albany, McDowell-Catt Foundation Board and Habitat for Humanity. Many groups and individuals benefited from Jean's commitment to helping those in need.
Jean was a dedicated member of the First Christian Church for over 50 years. He served as an elder for over 40 years.
Jean is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary Louise; sons Daniel, David and Dennis McCorkle; daughters Diana Patt, Debra Reimers and Dixie Hill; 14 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and sister Colleen McCorkle-Jackmond.
Jean's parents, Harry and Elizabeth McCorkle; sisters Pauline Swallow and Donna May Jerpe; and brother Kenneth McCorkle, preceded him in death.
A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, April 5, at Twin Oaks Memorial Park, 34275 Riverside Drive S.W., Albany. A celebration-of-life memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 6, at First Christian Church, 432 Ferry St. S.W., in Albany.
