Jedediah Matthew Lyons, 40, died Tuesday.
Jed was born in Burlingame, Calif., and moved to Albany when he was 5 years old. He lived the majority of his life in Oregon, moving to Nevada eight years ago. Oregon's clean, cool air and hundreds of friends and family made the Pacific Northwest an easy choice that ranked among his all-time favorite places to live.
Jed attended Oak Grove Grade School and North Albany Middle School, and graduating in 1991 from West Albany High School, where he played doubles tennis and went to state in his senior year. He also played soccer and was on the cross country track team. Jed graduated from Oregon State University.
Jed was a member of the West Albany Tennis Club for many years and enjoyed playing with many members in tournaments.
Jed worked at various jobs in high school from delivering pizzas to mowing lawns. Later, he worked at UPS for eight years in Oregon, and then in Nevada working for the state of Nevada Department of Corrections where he medically retired as a correctional officer.
Jed loved fly fishing with his grandfather, motorcycle riding with his many Oregon friends, including Donn Tanner, and mountain climbing in Oregon, California and Nevada. Jed was a voracious reader, keeping up with the financial world and politics. He most especially loved the outdoors and learned to surf the Northern California waters around Marin, Calif. He also was an animal lover and especially enjoyed his dog, Kizzy.
Jed is survived by mother Claudia Stone; stepfather Skip Stone; brother Jonathan Stone; father William R. Lyons; grandmother Irma Blackburn; aunt Christine and husband Steve Weintraub; aunt Charlene Stone; aunt Connie Stone; uncle Grant Stone; numerous uncles and cousins in California and Oregon; fiancee Donna Berry; and good friends in Oregon and Nevada who are numerous, but especially Andrea, Mark, Kevin, Marty, Donn, Ken and Joy.
He was preceded in death by grandparents James Blackburn, and Marguerite and William Lyons; and uncles Jeff Blackburn, Jerry Lyons and Michael Lyons.
A memorial Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Albany.
Memorials may be gratefully given to Samaritan Evergreen Hospice, 1046 Sixth Ave. S.W., Albany, OR 97321, for exceptional and loving care of Jed.
