Joan Marie (Powell) Rael

July 20, 1935 – January 14, 2022

Joan Rael passed from this life on January 14, 2022 at the age of 86 in Samaritan Evergreen Hospice, Albany, OR.  Born on July 20, 1935 in New Haven, Connecticut, Joan was the daughter of Cyril G. Powell and Mae Vitka Powell.  She attended Hillhouse High School in New Haven followed by nursing school at Yale New Haven Hospital where she met and married Roland G. Martineau of Hartford, Connecticut in 1956.   She divorced Roland in 1968.  By 1980, she relocated to San Antonio, Texas where she would meet and marry Leandro H. Rael on December 20, 1983.  Upon his retirement, they moved to Ione, Washington and enjoyed several years of living in the countryside of northeast Washington.  Joan leaves behind Marie (Martineau) Patterson and her husband Michael in Houston, Texas; David Martineau and his wife Sue, of Scio, Oregon, five stepchildren and three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.  Joan enjoyed traveling, animals, reading, gardening, dancing, and playing card and board games.  Donations in her memory can be made to SafeHaven Humane Society.
