John A. Phillips
March 2, 1949 - Dec. 30, 2015
John passed away Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2015, at the Veteran's Home in Lebanon after an extended illness.
John was born in Emporia, Kansas, to James and Violet (Longshore) Phillips on March 2, 1949. He was the middle child of five, his family moved to Oregon and finally settled in Albany about 1964. John graduated from Albany Union High School in 1968 and immediately joined the Marine Corps.
He met his future wife Sheryl McCanlas while home on leave from boot camp. They married in October of 1969 after John's discharge from the Marines. They had two children, Angelique and Anthony. They celebrated 46 years of marriage in October of this year.
John was a member of the Marine Corps League during its early years. He was a life member of the DAV and served as chaplain of the local chapter for a few years. John was a life member of Albany Oddfellows Lodge 4; a member of Beulah Rebekah Lodge 35; and a member at First Christian Church of Albany.
John worked as a home health aide until an injury forced him to retire. John's greatest joy in life was helping people and making new friends.
John is survived by his wife, Sheryl, daughter Angelique, son Anthony and wife Holly, all of Albany; sister Betty and husband Loren, and brother James and wife Karen, all of Albany; brother Dennis and wife Lynda of Jefferson; and brother Bruce and wife Margaret of Springfield.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15, AAsum-Dufour Funeral Home.
