IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Joyce Marie
(Lake) Ossinger
July 15, 1937 – February 19, 2025
Joyce Marie Ossinger, beloved mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully on February 19, 2025, at the age of 87, after a long battle with frontal temporal dementia. She was born on July 15, 1937, in Sandpoint Idaho to Stanley Odel Lake (Forest Service Ranger) and Hazell Marchbanks Lake (homemaker).
As a young woman, Joyce was a member of the Masonic organization, the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls, where she presided as a Worthy Advisor. Joyce attended high school at Highland High in Burien, Washington where she served on the student council where she met her future husband, Donald L. Ossinger. After high school, they both attended Washington State University in Pullman Washington where Joyce studied Home Economics. On July 6, 1956, Donald and Joyce married, soon after Donald joined the US Air Force and Joyce became an official Air Force wife, where she participated in the Officer's Wives Club. Moving many times throughout the United States, Joyce kept her husband and two small children together with love, strength, and determination. Once, after moving into a new home, she was asked how she handled so many moves and she said, "It's not that big of a deal. I do the same thing every time. First, I measure and alter or sew drapes for every window, then I unpack.
Joyce Ossinger worked as a claims clerk for an insurance company, a secretary/stenographer for Boeing Transport in Renton, Washington, and a salesclerk for JC Penney. In 1978 she attended a technical school and became proficient in using the IBM card computer. In 1979 she earned a credential and worked as a government Legal Secretary for Assistant Prosecuting Attorneys.
Joyce was also the proud mother of her daughter Diane Ettinger (Ken) and her son Richard (Ann). She expected the best and instilled in them a strong work ethic and a sense of integrity that has been passed down through the generations. Her heart was filled with love and warmth and everyone she met was always greeted with a smile. She loved flower gardening, visits with friends and family, travelling the world, cruising and studying genealogy.
Preceded in death by her husband Donald, Joyce leaves behind her daughter Diane, son-in-law Ken Ettinger, her son Richard, daughter-in-law Ann, granddaughters Rachel and Melissa and great granddaughters Jessica and Eloise, along with nieces and nephews. Joyce also loved giving her family advice and a piece of advice heard often was, "If you have a choice of strawberry, vanilla or chocolate flavors, you should always choose chocolate!"
