Larry Raymond Schmidt August 8, 1941 - April 27, 2023
Larry Raymond Schmidt was born in Lebanon, OR. He grew up on a farm located on Knox Butte a few miles northeast of Albany. He enjoyed farm life and loved to drive the tractors and other equipment. In spite of having polio when he was 8 years old, he had a very full and productive life. He enjoyed tinkering and could fix about anything, especially electrical. He attended Oregon State University and Idaho State University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Architecture. He worked nearly 35 years for the City of Salem checking plans for building permits. He enjoyed working with people and loved it when he could help them build their dream within the guidelines of the building codes. Larry married Wilma Bourquin on August 28, 1966, and they moved to Salem where they raised 5 children. He was a charter member of Westgate Assembly of God (now Family Life) and attended there the rest of his life, serving in various capacities. In 1998 he was honored to be chosen as the Oregon District Honorbound Man of the Year. He loved his God, his wife, and his family deeply. He often came home from work and spent time playing with his young children on the floor. Not long before he retired, he built a garden scale train layout in the back yard and enjoyed running his train. About 10 years ago he began putting together Lego sets and has done over 100 of them including many large, detailed ones. He was preceded in death by a sister, Dianne Hurley.
