Lawrence "Lefty" KujawaJuly 28, 1922 - Nov. 13, 2008Lawrence "Lefty" Kujawa, 86, of Albany died Thursday following a recent illness.Lefty was born in Chicago, Ill., and was one of eight children. his sister, Jayne Miksis of Largo, Fla., survives. Lefty grew up in depression era Chicago, leaving school prior to graduating to help provide for his family. On Dec. 8, 1941, Lefty proudly joined his boyhood buddies in enlisting in the Marine Corps following the attack on Pearl Harbor. He served in the storied Second Marine Division, "hitting the beaches" during battles at both Guadalcanal and Saipan. He also served as a crew chief in the Marine Air Corps at the end of the war, and was stationed in Eva, Hawaii, and the Corvallis Air Base.Lefty was a member of the original start-up team for Wah Chang Corporation in the late 1950s. He worked at Wah Chang for more than 30 years before retiring in the late 1980s. he spent his retirement years lovingly and actively involved in his grandchildren's lives, enjoying his favorite music, and of course following his beloved Chicago sports teams. He was active locally in the American Legion, Eagles and Elks Clubs.Lefty was married three times; the late Betty Ferguson in 1946, the late Ruth Volkman in 1953, and Jan Hangar in 1967. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, John and Maggie Kujawa of Portland; daughter and son-in-law Jill and Scott Ingalls of Lebanon; daughter and son-in-law Melanie and Robert Poole of Fresno, Calif., three step-children; 10 grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews around the country.A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at AAsum-Dufour Funeral Home.
