Margaret
Maier
Dec 28, 1933 — Jul 27, 2026
Margaret Therese Maier, born December 28, 1933, in the far south side of Chicago, died July 27, 2026, at age 92. Born the third of six children. She grew up in a close-knit, inter- generational family and was known by her friends and extended family as “Sis.”
Margaret attended St. Kevin parochial school and Aquinas Dominican High School in Chicago. She completed her nurse’s training at South Chicago Community Hospital in 1955.
In 1962, she moved to Albany with her first husband and their three young boys, while pregnant with her daughter.
As a Registered Nurse, Margaret worked for Dr. T.R. Deems in private practice and later worked at Linn Care Center before working 33 years at Albany General Hospital. She could always be seen walking to Albany General in her “Nurses Whites” as her home was just 1 block away.
In 1977, Margaret married Richard “Dick” Maier, whom she met through mutual friends, after Dick moved into a house across the street. Together they forged a happy partnership, sharing their strong Christian faith, family values, and work ethic, to build a comfortable, productive, and deeply satisfying life together.
With eight children between them, and a lot of love and plenty of elbow grease, their commitment and strength with love sprinkled in, they refurbished and created a beautiful home refuge in Little Albany on the Alsea River, where they spent many happy retirement years. They enjoyed fishing the Alsea, travel domestically and abroad, and hosted many family gatherings. Margaret especially loved tending to her plants and flowers in her backyard garden along with her many sewing projects. The couple later moved back to Albany. Margaret’s devoted husband and love of her life passed away in September 2011. Margaret resided in their North Albany home, independently, for many years until she moved to assisted living at Mennonite Village.
Preceding her in death were her father, Robert J Sloan, Sr, of Albany, OR, mother, Margaret Sloan, of Manhattan, KS, brothers Robert Sloan, Jr “Bobby,” of Antioch, CA, and Edward Sloan (“Bro”), of Manhattan, KS, as well as stepson, Rod Maier, of Sunnyvale, CA.
Margaret is survived by children Tom Rothengass (Chris), Vancouver, WA, Tim Rothengass (Joan), Castro Valley, CA, Tony Rothengass (Rhonda), Olympia, WA, Mary Beth Rothengass-Melero, Millersburg, OR and Rob Rothengass (Shannon), Salem, OR. Her stepchildren Allen Maier (Debbie), Kennewick, WA, and Laura Maier-Nova (Tony), Albany. Margaret is survived by Brother Francis Sloan (Mary), Watertown, MN, Sisters Mary Rita Spooner, Manhattan, KS, Kathy Davey, Ft. Collins, CO and Sister-In-Law Joan Sloan, Sparks Nevada.
In addition, Margaret leaves behind grandchildren: Demi, Drew, Sloan, Seth, and Madeline. Step grandchildren Christina, Tiffany, Kari, Jessica, Nick, Kendra and Ashley. Margaret is also survived by 12 great grandchildren.
