Newton A. CoxMay 29, 1931 - May 7, 2008Newton A. Cox, 76 of Albany, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday.He was born in Newberg to Robert Barclay and Opal Ione (Walker) Cox. He was raised in Sheridan and graduated from high school there. In 1951 Newton enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard and served at the Point Sur Lighthouse in Big Sur, Calif. On Feb. 23, 1952, Newton married Sarah B. Williams in Sheridan. After his discharge in 1954 they resided in Los Angeles until moving back to Sheridan in 1957 to do some farming. They then moved back to California to finish school. Newton graduated from Azusa Pacific College in 1964 and in 1967 they moved to Moses Lake, Wash., to teach school. They moved to Lebanon in 1977 and Newton taught at Lebanon Christian School then East Linn Christian Academy until Retirement in 1994. They moved to Foster in 1987 and then to Albany in 2004. He was an artist working in many mediums and enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting, and sharing the hope of Christ.He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sarah Cox of Albany; daughter Marti Helfrich of Sweet Home; sons Robert of Bend, Ben of Fairfield and Eric of Palmer, Ala.; brother Robert J. Cox of California; sister Aletha Jahn of Beaverton; 21 grandchildren; and 9 great grand children.A visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday at AAsum-Dufour Funeral Home.
