Obituary

Perry RothAugust 25, 1913 - August 13, 2009Perry Roth, 95, of Albany passed away Thursday, at Samaritan Albany General Hospital after a brief illness..Born in Milford, Neb., he was the son of Daniel G. and Susan (Oswald) Roth. His family moved to Montana when he was six months old.  At about 6 years of age, the family grew tired of the cold winters and moved to Oregon.  After a brief time, they settled near Plainview, south of Lebanon, where Perry grew to an adult.  These years were the source of many wonderful stories for his family. Perry learned to work hard on the farm at a young age and remembered plowing the fields behind horses.  He traveled to southern Oregon to harvest potatoes, Hood River for apple harvest, and slept next to the wheat threshing machine in eastern Oregon.  Motors and machinery were a particular interest of his and he worked at Barrett Bros. International in Albany, assembling combines and repairing farm equipment. In October 1940, Perry married Ruth J. Hoefer of Albany.  They were given a shivaree at their first home south of Corvallis.  Perry recalls trying to start a fire afterwards and having smoke pour out the fireplace -- someone had stuffed gunny sacks down the chimney.Eventually Perry and Ruth moved to the Santiam Central neighborhood east of Knox Butte to farm some acreage in the area.  Between 1943 and 1955, five children were born to them.  After the last child was born, the family moved to the farm at Dever-Conner, north of Albany, where Perry lived for the last 54 years.  He raised cattle and hogs, milked jersey cows, and grew wheat, mint, alfalfa, cucumbers, tomatoes, sweet corn and many other crops.  His gardens were outstanding and he loved sharing them with many friends and family.  He always gave credit to the good Willamette River bottom soil.  He was a true husbandman and cared greatly for his land.In 2007, after nearly 67 years of marriage, Ruth passed away.  Perry continued on the farm that he loved and enjoyed the vegetables from his garden until his time of passing. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers Roy, Menno, Jesse, Leonard, and Daniel; and sisters, Florence Oake and Edna Kenagy.  He is survived by his  sons Ronald and Douglas; daughters Josephine Helms, Janet Lundberg and Carol Thomas;  brothers Jacob and Alan Roth; 19 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.A visitation will be from 1:00 to 7:00 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home.  Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. Thursday at the Marion Church of God Seventh Day on Marion Stayton Road.  Burial will be at Jefferson Pioneer Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations be made to Samaritan Albany General Hospital Hospice House Building Fund in care of the funeral home.  AAsum-Dufour Funeral Home is handling arrangements.  ( www.aasum-dufour.com )
