Richard "Dick" Curry, 84, of Albany, passed away Thursday, Aug. 6, 2015, at Samaritan Evergreen Hospice House in Albany.
Richard Vering Curry was born in Quincy, Ill., to Lloyd Monta and Violet Viola (Vering) Curry.
Mr. Curry was a member of the last graduating class from Mendon (Ill.) Township High School, in 1948.
While training to be a jet fighter pilot in the Air Force, Dick married Norma Jean Hufendick, of Ursa, Ill., at Salem Evangelical and Reformed Church, Ninth and State, Quincy on July 5, 1953.
Norma worked as a registered nurse while Dick attended and graduated from Tri-State College, Angola, Ind., with a degree in aeronautical engineering. In 1958, they moved to Wichita, Kan., where he began his career with Boeing as an engineer, later becoming an experimental test pilot.
In 1964, Dick was pilot of the B52-H, successfully landing the "Plane Without a Tail Fin," after the fin sheared off during a test flight. Through Boeing, Dick graduated in 1966 from the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School, at Patuxent River Naval Air Station, Md. Dick, Norma and their two daughters spent the summer of 1968 at Sunnyvale, Calif., where he was a test pilot for the 367-80, forerunner of the Boeing 707. The "Dash-80" is now at the Smithsonian Institution. The family moved to Frankfurt, Germany from 1970-72, where Dick was a Captain for the charter airline, Calair. They relocated to Bellevue, Wash., and Dick returned to Boeing as a Senior Instructor Pilot for the 707, 727, 737, 757 and 767. He traveled around the world training in these planes until retiring in 1990.
Dick and Norma moved to Moses Lake, in Central Washington. In 2002, their daughter and family all located to Corvallis, Ore. The couple then moved to nearby Albany to enjoy the activities of their three grandchildren.
His other interests included motorhome travel, fishing and having a Scottie dog in the household.
Dick is survived by Norma, wife of 62 years, daughters Joni Curry and Lisa Curry and her husband Dave Waldo all of Corvallis; grandson Payden Waldo and his wife Amanda Porter of Bellingham, Wash; granddaughters Katie Waldo and Claire Waldo both of Corvallis; nephew Jack Curry and wife Jane of Mendon, Ill. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Eugene Monta Curry; and sister in law Georgia Curry.
