Dick WhitakerJan. 14, 1928-Feb. 11, 2010Richard Lee "Dick" Whitaker of Albany died Thursday in the presence of loved ones.He was born in Lebanon and graduated in 1946 from Albany Union High School.He met Retha Flowers from Salem before entering the U.S. Army in September 1946. When he returned from being stationed in Korea, they were married on Feb. 19, 1949.A graduate of Benke Walker Business College, he began his career in the building materials industry at Scharpf's, where he worked for 33 years. He went on to manage retail stores in Washington and eventually the Oregon coast. He retired and retuned to Albany in 1991.Mr. Whitaker is survived by his wife, Retha; son Rick and his wife, Kay, of Salt Lake City; daughter Connie Bishop and her husband, Carl, of Tangent; grandchildren Bridey, Jesse, Kara and Nicholas; great-granddaughter Elyse; brothers Edwin of Lynnwood, Wash., and Larry of Beaverton, and sister Marie Potter of Albany.A memorial service and reception will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16, at AAsum-Dufour Funeral Home, Albany. The family would appreciate donations to the Oregon chapter of the Alzheimer's Association.
