Dick Smith died at his home in Corvallis from health problems related to smoking.
Dick was born and lived in Salem most of his life. He served in the Army during World War II, was Records Clerk at the Oregon State Penitentiary for 10 years, and ended his career as a Research Analyst at the State of Oregon Department of Corrections. He retired from state service in 1982 after 28 years.
Dick is survived by his wife, Rosa, sons: Shawn of Great Falls, Montana, Kim of Salem, Oregon, and Vern of Corvallis, Oregon and daughters Pamela Peterson of Portland, Oregon and Susan Steptoe of Los Angeles, California, sister-in-law Eloise Smith and 10 grandchildren . Dick was much loved by his family and he will be greatly missed.
Dick loved Oregon and spent many weekends and vacations with his family at the Oregon Coast and Little North Fork. He enjoyed hunting for and polishing agates. He liked to play chess, read, and listen to music. He was active in Pentacle Theatre for many years. He also had a love of animals and the family cats, Tiger and Nessie, spent many hours on the bed with him in his final days
