Ruby P. MeyerApril 6, 1910 - August 11, 2007Ruby P. Meyer, 97, a long time resident of Albany, Oregon, passed away on August 11, 2007 at the Mennonite Home in Albany. Ruby was born April 6, 1910 in Newburg, North Dakota to Carl and Christina Hulda Petersen. She was the sixth child of ten children. She lived a long, energetic and resilient life, but lost a courageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis.Ruby graduated from Westhope High School in North Dakota in 1928. She attended Dakota Business School in 1929. She later received her degree in teaching from Minot State Teachers College. After completing her teaching degree she was employed as a teacher at Meyer School #1 near Rugby, North Dakota.She met her husband, Floyd E. Meyer, a farmer, while she was teaching near Rugby. They were married Dec. 26, 1935 at Shedd, Oregon. They moved to the farm in North Dakota and lived there until 1958, when Mr. Meyer died of a heart attack. Five children were born from this union, four of whom survive. They are Annette Worden of Aberdeen, Washington, Jerry Meyer of Roseburg, Oregon, Susan Forcum, of Bend, Oregon, and Sally Greathouse of West Linn, Oregon. Gary died in March of 1938 at the age of 11 months. Floyd had two children of his own, Frank and Patricia at the time of their marriage in 1935, and they were blessed with a loving mother in Ruby.Ruby and the children moved to Albany, Oregon after Floyd's death, where she continued her teaching career at Fir Grove and Oakville Elementary School in Shedd, Oregon. She taught at Oakville for fifteen years and retired from teaching in 1975. Ruby continued to live in her home in Albany until Oct. 2004, when she moved to Alterra Villa, a retirement community.Ruby enjoyed reading, gardening, poetry, concerts, her church, and trips to Yuma, Arizona in the winters with a sister. Ruby attended the Church of God in Albany, Oregon for many years. She spoke often of her trip to England and Copenhagen, Denmark, where her mother had lived as a young girl. Ruby took great delight in her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Family and friends remember Ruby as a loving, kind, considerate, bright woman who remained sharp until the end. She had a great memory for dates and people. She will be missed by many.Other survivors, beside her four children, are two sisters, Helene Lannon of Portland, Oregon, and Evelyn Stavenau of Corvallis, Oregon, eleven grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Ruby was preceded in death by her husband Floyd; children Gary, Frank and Patricia; sisters Esther, Irma, Edna and Lillian; and brothers Victor, Richard, and Erhart.Memorial service will be held Saturday, August 18, at AAsum-Dufour Funeral Home at 2:00 pm.
