Sara was born March 29, 1924, to Clayton and Margaret Schuler in Eagle Rock, California. Her dad was in construction and in 1929 jobs were scarce and caused her folks to move to Phoenix, Arizona. The results were she attended many schools. Her folks later moved to El Monte and she grew up there.
She loved to study ad while attending El Monte High School she decided to study medical laboratory technology. Her dad joined the Army Corps of Engineers and was transferred to Logan, Utah. After she graduated El Monte High School, Sara and her mother moved to Logan, Utah.
Sara then attended the Utah State Agricultural College at Logan, Utah, where the Army Air Force Cadets were sent. Sarah was assigned the task of correcting their physics papers.
Sara met John at church and they started going together on weekends. Homer, John's roommate, got caught trying to see her during times when he wasn't supposed to be off the college campus and was confined to the college campus for the rest of his stay. Sarah always accused John of turning Homer in and eliminating the competition.
Sarah later graduated from the University of Utah Magna Cum Laude in Medical Laboratory Technology. In April 1944, John graduated from Air Force Flying School and went to see Sarah in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Much later Sarah and John were married in McClellan Field, Sacramento, California, on
Nov. 3, 1944.
After returning from combat, John went to college and graduated from the University of California. Sarah worked at Hanken's Medical Center in Azusa, California, while John was a coastal engineer for the County of Los Angeles.
Sarah and John had two children, Jeffery and David. Jeffrey became a minister and chaplain. David became an attorney at law. They had four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A viewing will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9, at AAsum-Dufour Funeral Home. A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 11, at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. A memorial service will then take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, at Riverside Baptist Church, 1300 Spring Hill Drive, Albany.
