IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Stephen "Steve"
Douglas Cramer
July 10, 1938 – April 12, 2024
Stephen (Steve) D. Cramer, of Albany, OR, passed away quietly on April 12, at the age of 85. Steve was born in Portland, OR on July 10, 1938 to Carl and Lucille Cramer. After living in Oregon and Washington state, the family moved to Kensington, MD, where Steve graduated from BCC High School and met his future wife, Sandy.
Steve started his college career at Cornell University in NY and then transferred to the University of Maryland, College Park, where he received his Bachelor of Science (1961) and his Ph.D (1968) in Chemical Engineering with a minor in Mathematics. Steve worked for the US Bureau of Mines (now Dept. of Energy) on environmental corrosion and acid rain, and before retirement, in conjunction with Oregon DOT on its rehabilitation of historic coastal bridges. In his professional life, Steve was a NACE International Fellow (National Association of Corrosion Engineers). Throughout his career he received a number of honors and awards and published numerous papers and scientific journal articles, notably, "Monticello Roof Restoration," Materials Performance magazine, vol. 32(10), Oct. 1993, pp. 61-64; and "Thermal sprayed titanium anode for cathodic protection of reinforced concrete bridges," Journal of Thermal Spray Technology, Volume 8, Issue 1, March 1999, Pages: 133 - 145.
Steve and Sandy lived in Takoma Park, MD for 19 years where they raised their three kids. There he was involved with Boy Scout Troop 33 for 17 years. In addition to serving as a troop committee member, he served as an Assistant Scout Master for 15 years and Scout Master for 2 years. As part of the scout troop and for personal enjoyment, Steve lead adventure activities in camping, canoeing, white water rafting, caving, hiking and rock climbing. When his job took him to Albany, OR in 1988, Steve joined the Willamette Kayak and Canoe Club. He went on many canoeing and rafting adventures, contributed to the club's Soggy Sneakers guide book, participated in the annual Bend, OR Pole Pedal Paddle race, and once canoed and several times rafted the Grand Canyon. When Steve was not traveling on adventures with friends and family, he loved to cook for family and friends, listen to music, read and work in his garden.
Steve was loving husband to Sandra (Sandy) Cramer; loving father to Cindy Snow, Douglas Cramer and Michelle Cramer (Nixon Thelusmond); loving grandfather to Jessica Snow, Susan (Maarten) deVriend, Ian Cramer, Erica (John) Lobell and Dylan Cramer; and loving great grandfather to Fiona Snow Martin, Kailynn Snow-Verdon, Lillyauna deVriend and Alden Lobell. He is also survived by brothers David Cramer and Greg Cramer (Fran), and preceded in death by sister Deborah (Robert/children: Charles & Jennifer) Schaaf.
A Memorial Boat Float & BBQ Celebration is planned on Saturday, July 13, down the Willamette River in Albany, OR (https://www.basicinvite.com/site/steve_cramer). A more formal celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer donations to support the Albany Carousel Museum, American Whitewater or the Alzheimer's Association in Steve's honor.
