Stephen C. Stocks, 75, of Albany passed away Monday.
Steve was born in Portland to Otto and Martha (Baurle) Stocks. After graduating from Benson Polytechic High School, he entered the United States Army in 1957 where he served honorably for two years. Upon obtaining an engineering degree from Oregon State University, he went to work first for Kaiser Steele in Fontana, Calif., and then for Oregon Metallurgical Corporation (ORMET) from which he retired in 1996.
Steve married Judith Ann Atterbury in 1962 and they have three children, Stephanie Hoskns and husband Russ, Shelby Burnette and husband Michael, and Samantha Jordan and husband Eliot. He had three grandchildren, Alexandria "Sasha" Williams, and Vaugh and Mari Jordan. Besides his wife, children and grandchildren, he is survived by his brothers Donald and Lawrence Stocks; and sister Bernice Jolliver.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters Rhoda Vandenburg, Verna Roberts and Judy Dumont.
Steve was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman. He enjoyed the time at the Oregon coast as well as the many streams and rivers in the area. He was very active in the community and believed strongly in giving to those in need. He was involved in the Albany Veteran's Day Parade as well as the Timber Carnival. Steve was a long-time member of the Albany chapter of Rotary International where he worked on numerous national and international ventures including wheelchair projects in Uganda and other third world countries, clean water projects in South America and sending supplies to areas in the Philippines and Africa. He especially enjoyed those projects which involved helping children and exemplified the quotation from Abraham Lincoln, "No man stands so tall as when he stoops to help a child."
A private service will be held at Willamette National Cemetery. At Steve's request, a celebration of life will be held after the first of the year. As no date has been set, please send inquiries to stocksmemorial@gmail.com for information on the date and location.
