Vernon Elmer Headings, 91, of Albany passed away Sunday morning at the Mennonite Home.
He was born in Cheraw, Colo., to Elmer C. and Ada Eldora (Hooley) Headings. When Vernon was a small child the family moved to Oregon. He was married in Albany on Feb. 28, 1943, to Grace Roth. As a youth, his favorite pastime was trapping.
When he was 18, he went to work at Munion Bakery in Lebanon. After working at the Albany Chair Factory he worked at Frank Glaser's seed warehouse, then moved on to Normarc Co-op in Tangent. Along with being a grass seed farmer, he also enjoyed steelhead fishing along the Alsea River, tending his flock of sheep, hunting with family and taking leisure naps in his blue Chevy pickup while it was parked in the sun. A large garden and many flowers were tended to by Grace and Vernon.
Although Vernon was a quiet natured person, he loved playing pranks on people. He was a member of Fairview Mennonite Church. Vernon and Grace celebrated 69 years of marriage on Feb. 28.
Vernon is survived by his children: son Gary and wife Cheryl Headings of Redmond, son Dan and wife Ramona Headings of Albany, daughter Sharlene and husband James Kanagy of Belleville, Pa., and son Larry and wife Terri Headings of Merced, Calif.; 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-grandchild due in April, one great-great-grandchild due in July, and sister Clysta Buerge of Albany.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace, who passed away March 16; his parents, eight brothers and five sisters.
A viewing will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 26, at the funeral home. A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, April 27, at Fairview Mennonite Church, 35100 Goltra Road, Albany, with burial to follow at Fairview Mennonite Cemetery.
