Obituary

Wayne W. Wehrli, 88, of Albany passed away Thursday at his home with his son, Ronald Wehrli, at his side.

He was born in Fairbury, Neb., the son of Fred and Nellie (Green) Wehrli and moved to Albany in May of 1937. Wayne enlisted in the U.S. Army in May of 1941 and went to Hawaii Scofield Barracks for basic training. He was placed in Company G 21st Infantry and survived the attack on Pearl Harbor. In November of 1942 he shipped out to Christmas Island 2nd Battalion 102nd Infantry. In July of 1943 he returned to Scofield Barracks and joined the Anti Tank Company with the 165th Infantry and served in the Gilbert Islands, Marrianna Islands and invaded Okinawa. He was discharged in September of 1945.

Wayne married Irene L. Steinmeyer in Stevenson, Wash., on Aug. 6, 1955. He worked as a dispatcher for Pacific Power and Mountain States Power Company, and retired in 1984.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, working around his house and his rentals, and traveling to Alaska to visit his son. He was a member of the American Legion Post 10, VFW Post 584, the BPOE, Pearl Harbor Survivors, the IBEW and was Oregon's Veteran of the year in 2001.

He is survived by sons Ronald of Eagle River, Alaska, and Jeffery of Albany; daughter Jayne Jones of Albany; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene.

A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 5, AAsum-Dufour Funeral Home, with burial to follow at Twin Oaks Memory Gardens. Full military honors will be presented by the American Legion Post 10 and the U.S. Army.
