William Henry Wimer

William Henry Wimer, 78, of Albany passed away peacefully in his home Sunday morning.
Henry was born in Woodburn, Oregon to Joseph Wimer and Marie (McCoy) Wimer on April 4, 1937. He graduated from Canby High School in 1955 as a three-year letterman in track and wrestling. He married the girl next door, Phyllis Schmidt, on October 24, 1959 in Aurora. He spent 20 years in the Navy stationed in Texas, Hawaii, and California. When he retired, he moved his wife and four children to Oregon and settled in Lebanon. He spent the next several years working in heating and air conditioning before retiring full-time.
Henry is survived by his loving wife Phyllis (Schmidt) Wimer, his children Dana (Brian) Vinchesi of Lake Oswego, OR; Vicki Wimer of Surprise, AZ; Brian Wimer of Lake Stevens, WA; and Cherie (Troy) May of Joseph, OR. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, with number 11 on the way, many nieces and nephews, step-sisters Trinna Ryan, Anna Prescott, and DeLyla (Dick) West.
He is preceded in death by his mother Marie (McCoy) Wimer, his father Joseph Wimer, his step-mother Lorena (Speake) Wimer, and two brothers Ernest Wimer and Bobby Wimer.
He was an air mechanical engineer in the Navy. During his time in the service he had the privilege of being part of the crew on the Kittyhawk bringing the ship around the Horn in 1961. During this cruise he and the crew helped with the recovery from the Chilean earthquake of 1960. He served in the Vietnam War as part of air transport.
Henry was a very loving and devoted husband and father, uncle, grandfather, and great-grandfather. One of his favorite things to do was spending time with family. He enjoyed sports and played on three different softball teams as a pitcher during his Navy career. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, hunting, and golf. He was a member of the Mallard Creek Golf Course in Lebanon for many years where he had three hole-in ones.
A small private graveside ceremony at the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland will be held on Friday, January 8, 2016 at 10:00am. A Celebration of Life ceremony will follow at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Albany at 12:30pm with a luncheon following the service.
