Edmund Prieto Tribute

Edmundo D. Prieto

November 08, 1926 - April 16, 2024

Edmund “Bosco” Prieto was called home to his Heavenly Father in the early morning hours on Tuesday, April 16, 2024. He lived a long, full life and leaves those who knew him with many memories of joy and laughter.

Edmund was born in Baguanos, Cuba, to Jose Prieto and Angelica Sanciprian Prieto. He was a man who was known to tell wild and exciting stories, he began humbly in a small rural town on Cuba’s mountainous eastern side. As a young man, he loved to play with local community sport teams and listen to music whenever he could. He worked on the railway as a brake engineer and loved trains his whole life.

Edmund met the love of his life and married his wife of 72 years, Edith Santiago Prieto in July 1952. After starting their family, Cuba’s revolutionary war began and their lives would change forever. Edmund did not agree with the Communist movement that took hold as a result of the revolution and he worked to immigrate with his family to the United States. In August of 1966, he along with his wife and two children arrived in the U.S. and set down roots in Morgan City, Louisiana.

Edmund and Edith built a beautiful life in southern Louisiana. They owned two successful businesses, including an auto body mechanic shop that he ran for over 20 years before retiring. They raised their family and became beloved members of the St. Mary’s Parish community.

Edmund loved life and enjoyed many passions and hobbies during his 97 years. He and Edith loved traveling and adventured to places across the United States in their campers over the years. He loved music and was always dancing, including at his granddaughter’s wedding to his favorite song “Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White” by Perez Prado. Edmund was known as an avid fisherman, having won the world record (at the time) for largest blue catfish through the American Sport Fisherman’s Club. He also was in the 5 to 1 and 8 to 1 club for weight of fish to line it was caught.

Edmund was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Mercedes Prieto Martinez and Mireya Prieto Heres. He is survived by his wife, Edith Prieto, daughter, Edith Birky (Gary Birky), son, Jose Prieto (Alistair Reid-Prieto), and granddaughter, Marisa Mullins (Cormac Mullins), and great-grandsons, Liam Mullins and Rhys Mullins.

Edmund was a deeply faithful Catholic. All of his life, he found strength from his patron saint, San Juan Bosco. San Juan Bosco devoted his life to charity, specifically the education and care of abandoned and disadvantaged youth in his community. San Juan Bosco began the Salesian Missions. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Salesian Missions in his name at https://salesianmissions.org/act-now.

There will be a private family gathering held on Thursday, April 18, 2024.
