Roberta August Tribute

Roberta Maxine (McRoberts) August

April 4, 1927 – April 6, 2020

Roberta quietly passed from this life in the early hours of Monday, April 6, 2020, at Evergreen Hospice House. Beloved family matriarch and friend, she will be greatly missed. Knowing that she is no longer in pain and is again with the love of her life, Gus August (died 2016), and daughter, Susan (died 2011), brings us great comfort.
Roberta was born in Long Beach, CA, the last of seven children, to Maude (Myers) and Artie McRoberts. All her siblings preceded her in death. She was raised in Downey, CA, in a home constructed, over many years, by her carpenter father. During her teenage years she worked at a deli market, JC Penney, and a dentist office.
Navy Seaman Gus Steve August came into her life, when she was but 16 years old, at a dance. They were married August 29, 1945, three days before he left for a 10-month stint with the Navy in the South Pacific. After his discharge, the couple relocated to Pueblo, CO, where Gus attended junior college, then on to Lawrence, KS, where he completed a Journalism degree at the University of Kansas. During this time, Roberta worked as a nurse assistant.
Their first child, Kathryn Lee, was born in Lawrence in 1948. After graduation, Roberta and Gus moved their family to Walsenburg, CO; Billings, Montana; and Worland, Wyoming, in pursuit of his career. Their second child, Susan Lynn, was born in Worland in 1950. In 1954, when it became evident Susan needed additional medical care resources, the family relocated to Lebanon, Oregon, where Roberta worked at Lebanon Community Hospital and, later, at Lebanon Community Schools Credit Union. Their family grew to include Nathan Paul (1955) and Leslie Jean (1958). They moved to Albany in 1968.
Over the years, Roberta actively raised her children and was a constant advocate for Susan’s medical care throughout her life. Roberta loved the outdoors, taking her children camping on the Metolius and the Oregon coast, and on day trips to Trout Creek and Green Peter. She was an avid seamstress and gardener, and thoroughly enjoyed watching her grand and great-grandchildren’s sporting events. She very much appreciated visits and phone calls from her family spread out across the country. She was an active member of the Church of Christ in Albany until she moved to Lebanon in 2009 to be closer to Gus who was in the VA Home.
Her surviving children and their spouses include, Kathryn and Michael Clemens, Juneau, AK; Nathan and Corinne August, Corona, CA; and Leslie and Glen Soltau, Lebanon, OR. Roberta leaves a rich legacy in her nine grandchildren and their spouses, 16 great-grandchildren, and two great, great-grandchildren.
A small family memorial will be held for Roberta in mid-summer on the Oregon Coast.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Samaritan Evergreen Hospice.
